About Us

What is the Kids Collection?
The kids’ collection of Wisconsin’s Water Library is made up primarily of children's water-related books that have won awards or appeared on best books lists. If there were no award-winning books on a water topic, we chose books that received favorable reviews and, if nonfiction, were reliable sources of information.

Most books are for young children (preschool through second grade), although we also have materials for older children and young adults. The collection includes both fiction and nonfiction and some children's videos.

How Do You Use this Site?
Users can browse our book lists organized by topic and age group or search for titles online in the Wisconsin’s Water Library catalog as well as in the UW-Madison catalog, MadCat.

The age groups used in the book lists are:

  • For the youngest child: prekindergarten through second grade.
  • For the middle years: third through fifth grade.
  • For older children and young adults: sixth grade and above.

Besides lists of recommended books, we have children's videos, story hour ideas and a section just for kids.

Who Can Check Out Books?
Any adult Wisconsin resident may request books and other library materials sent to their local public library for pickup and return. You must be 18 or over to use this service.

What is Wisconsin's Water Library?
Wisconsin's Water Library is a project of the UW Water Resources Library to improve access to reliable water information for Wisconsin residents.

About this Site
This site was designed during fall 2005 with the help of three students enrolled in the UW School of Library and Information Studies Information Architecture course: Molly Kliss, Jodi Leslie and Ellsworth Rockefeller. Others who worked on this site while students were Stephanie Good and Shao-Chen Lin.

The photos used on this site were taken at the Allied Drive Learning Center in Madison, Wisconsin. The "Allied Drive Story Hours" began last summer when the UW Water Resources Library launched the first of a series of story hour programs. The project has since become a partnership between six other specialized campus libraries, the UW-Madison School of Library and Information Studies, and the Madison School and Community Recreation Safe Haven Childcare Program.
