World Health Organization. Guidelines for Drinking-Water Quality. 3rd ed. Geneva: The Organization, 2004.

The third edition of this WHO publication provides state-of-the art perspectives on issues of water quality and health as well as on effective approaches to water safety management. Hilton, George Woodman. The Great Lakes Car Ferries. Berkeley, Cal.: Howell-North, 1962.

Though published four decades ago, this is still considered to be the definitive work on the history of car ferries designed to transport railroad cars across the lakes in the days before tunnels and bridges had been built for this purpose. Highly readable and informative.

201612

Lerner, Steve. Diamond: A Struggle for Environmental Justice in Louisiana's Chemical Corridor. Cambridge, Mass.: MIT Press, 2005.

Located between a Shell plant and an oil refinery, the community of Diamond is in a "chemical corridor." The effects of living in this toxic environment went unrecognized until a grassroots effort called attention to the high concentration of lung cancer and nervous system damage in the community. The legal and scientific issues are examined in a way which will keep you turning the pages for more.
